Paintings.

Some of these paintings are available over at the Store. Those not for sale are marked as such. It probably goes against the advice of most artists but I find it motivating to share all the parts of my journey and process, warts and all. Every painting helps me to make every one after that better.

Snowy walk, 12×16 watercolor

Paintings

We had quite a lot of snow this past winter. This was the scene one morning after a snowfall at the dog park, just inside the front gate. 12×16 watercolor – NY Central 300gsm cold-pressed paper – Collection of the artist

Painted mostly with an eyedropper and a spray bottle! 8×12 watercolor – NY Central 300gsm cold-pressed paper – Collection of the artist

Lighthouse, 12×16 watercolor

Paintings

This scene was from a few miles outside Vancouver harbor, where we went whale-watching. There were no whales to watch – apparently they don’t like the cold or sideways rain – but there were some pretty spectacular remote islands. 12×16 watercolor – NY Central 300gsm cold-pressed paper – Not available

Lone pine, 9×12 watercolor

Paintings

This was from a trip to Yosemite National Park in 2024. 9×12 watercolor – Kilimanjaro 300gsm cold-pressed paper – Collection of the artist

Out walking, 28x38cm watercolor

Paintings

I painted this from a reference photo I took on the Rocktown trail at Wilson Lake State Park in north central Kansas. It was bright and sunny and quite warm, and walking back up these bluffs took it out of us! 28x38cm watercolorBaohong 300gsm rough paperCollection of the artist

Let the sun in, 5.5×7.5 watercolor

Paintings

I tried to recreate a reference photo using wet-on-wet techniques. I learned that you shouldn’t try to recreate something using those techniques; just let it be what it is. In the end I was happy with it. 5.5×7.5in watercolorBlick Premier 300gsm cold-pressed paperCollection of the artist

Evening grass, 8×12 watercolor

Paintings

Man, I thought. Why did I put that orangey-red grass right in the center of that thing? Don’t put crap in the middle! Every art instruction book or course has this in the first ten minutes. I don’t know – I ended up liking it. 8×12 watercolorNew York Central 300gsm cold-pressed paperCollection of the artist

Walk to forget, 6×9 watercolor

Paintings

I went through a phase with some of these. Actually it was online lessons from a Welsh artist, Dolores Phelps. She is one of the artistic grandchildren of the great Nita Engle (1925-2019). Dolores put her own spin on these free-wheeling techniques with a very moody palette and both me and my wife found a […]

Shore lunch, 12x16in watercolor

Paintings

I was going to trash this one, but my wife talked me out of it. She is (almost) always right, so I kept it and it has grown on me. Reflections could use some work – those are pretty difficult to get right. However, it did give me the same feeling I had while on […]
